I wasn’t going to have a baby shower but ultimately I can never pass up the chance to plan special cakes (and to celebrate our soon-to-be baby with sweet friends, of course!). Similar to my wedding blog, I am sharing the highlights of what went into the afternoon, including the menu, cake inspiration, outfit details, what perfume I wore, some of the special gifts we received, and an alternative to baby shower games.

Chocolate Marzipan Duckie Cake
The day before I found out I was pregnant my husband and I were planning to go out for dinner at a restaurant we love - but that evening for some reason I felt put off by the idea and only wanted chicken tenders at home. We ended up ordering these in instead and then the next day I took a pregnancy test. Fast forward to planning the baby shower spread: I was thinking of Miranda’s baby shower on Sex and the City where she requests fried chicken instead of Charlotte’s suggestion of a sophisticated puttanesca. I loved this idea and wanted fried chicken at my baby shower, too. We went with the same chicken tenders from that evening in March, which are from Aloette and are the best. I served them on a silver platter with honey mustard for dipping. To accompany the chicken we had a crudité spread. All of the veggies (carrots, slices of watermelon radish tossed with lemon juice, carrots, endive, cherry tomatoes, treviso, fennel, cucumber) came from Aldergrove. To go with these beautiful vegetables I made a Green Goddess dressing full of tarragon, watercress, arugula and parsley (recipe ever so slightly adapted from Canal House Cooking Volume 1: Summer - I mention this series all the time here, but I can’t recommend it enough). It all was perfect and I highly suggest this menu for any party spread.

Cake Inspiration
I wasn’t sure what to do for the baby shower cake (a giant sheet cake? a princess cake?) but after talking about it with my friend Patti, she suggested a Battenberg cake. This made me immediately think of my Marzipan book (a past birthday gift from Joel), which I turned to for inspiration:
