Detail I loved of Lucy McKenzie’s Quodlibet XXXI, taken on an NYC trip in 2018 at Matthew Marks Gallery. Part of their exhibition Painting: Now and Forever, Part III.

Here is my monthly diet of things that have occupied my thoughts, moved me in some way or just feel special enough to share here with you in the form of food, clothes, movies, books etc. for paying subscribers. Last month’s included a new ice cream book, the perfect baby (and ice cream) spoon, summer pastas, Eve Babitz, Catherine Breillat, double-spoon earrings and tomato season.

Below, highlights include my French menu dress and an ebay deep dive for 12 other food-focused Pleats Please looks, summer toasts for breakfast and lunch, a chic dress to wear while pregnant (equally chic if not pregnant, too), lemon verbena cake, August viewing (featuring movies that serve as a good reset for fall) and what I bought from my recent trip to Mast Books.

In my last newsletter I mentioned and shared a photo of the above Pleats Please Menu dress and how I’ve been enjoying how it looks with a baby bump. It’s been so fun to wear lately and has made me think of past food related Pleats Please pieces I’ve come across, loved and saved (and one I very much regret not getting - quiche set I’m looking at you). Quite literally the intersection of food and fashion.

As for the menu dress, I bought it on ebay in August 2021, coincidentally before what my husband and I coined our lovers weekend to Montreal. I brought it along and it was only fitting to wear it to L’Express, another institution restaurant that I love. To my delight it looked *just like* their menu. We ordered celery remoulade, chicken liver pate, steak frites eaten alongside the big jar of cornichons served to the table and an unmemorable dessert.

Some window shopping…

Quiche set - ingredients and finished meal all set atop a gingham print complete with fringe - this look is currently listed here (prices have gone up significantly over the past few years - the quiche set has not escaped inflation)
Maybe you prefer a quiche outfit set against red gingham - these are screenshots saved from a 2019 listing priced at around $150 per piece - putting here for posterity

How about wearing a recipe for cherry buns and farmhouse cake? I’m into it - this one is currently on TRR - there’s also a stunning tank version here
