July mood: Isabelle Huppert and her beach sandwich in Going Places (1974)

Last year I had a running post on instagram, a monthly “diet” of things that had either occupied my thoughts, moved me in some way or just felt special enough to share; what I was reading, watching, eating, wearing and, sometimes, visual research that fit with the mood of the month. I’ve been revisiting the series here as a monthly letter for paying subscribers (thank you thank you!). If you missed last month’s I wrote about potato chips as medicine, early pregnancy dressing, my favourite place to get cotton nightgowns, films and weekend activities I enjoyed and gingham bags.

Currently Reading (and Scooping):

I’ve been a long distance fan of Kitty Travers and her frozen delights for years now (my dream is to one day have one of her magical ice cream cakes). Scrolling through IG I am always excited to stop and look at which flavours she’s making: Strawberry Salad, Chestnut Cremolata, Chocolate and Caper etc. Now that I have an ice cream maker, and being that it’s peak ice cream season and all, I finally ordered her book La Grotta Ices. I’ve been reading it at night like a bedtime story (for sweet dreams ahead!) and LOVED learning about her journey to becoming such a magical ice cream chef. The photography in the book is equally as inspiring and provides such a sweet accompaniment to her writing and recipes.

I am addicted to the Unagi Cucumbers from Aldergrove Farm and when I flipped to Kitty’s recipe for Cucumber and Sour Cream Ice Cream I knew that would be the first of her recipes to try, especially since it sounded so refreshing for summer humidity. She promises this is a novelty flavour that won’t languish in your freezer, which I can attest to after making it last week.
