Last year I had a running post on instagram, a monthly “diet” of things that had either occupied my thoughts, moved me in some way or just felt special enough to share; what I was reading, watching, eating, wearing and, sometimes, visual research that fit with the mood of the month. I am revisiting this series and expanding upon it here as a monthly letter for paying subscribers (thank you!!!). If you missed last month’s, I wrote about matching your outfit to your sandwich (featuring the Brooke Callahan straight skirt in Bud and the best BLT in Toronto), memorable pancakes, diners, Frankie and Johnny, a visit to Buffalo and the ‘Speedboat’ painting, and my favourite garden.
Potato Chips as Medicine
Last week, on the summer solstice I shared some personal news. Consequently, for the past few months an important part of my diet has been plain potato chips. I had horrible morning sickness and I read (from the website given to me by my doctor!) that a remedy is to eat a few salty potato chips, which should settle the stomach enough to eat a meal. I took this to heart and always made sure to have this “medicine” on hand (my favourite being Kettle Brand Sea Salt). While I was in upstate NY for a weekend earlier in June I bought this potato-chip-shaped chip clip and a bag of Bonilla a la vista, a Spanish brand which I have always been curious about trying. (I fantasize about their giant can! which would make the best hostess gift.) I haven’t had luck finding these in Canada but was thrilled to try them.
Transitional Dressing
Here are some outfits I wore in June, that helped accommodate a growing baby bump and the transition into summer:
Butter yellow oxford + Maryam Nassir Zadeh ‘Puglia’ striped capris. This oxford shirt came from O’Connell’s in Buffalo, a store I mentioned in my strawberry blog. I love wearing button-ups in the summer, particularly men’s oversized ones. The quality of the O’Connell’s shirts is outstanding. I invested in a few knowing I would wear them for many months/years to come. The capris I bought in 2020 and the material is heaven. The navy suede pumps are Manolo Blahnik I bought years ago from The Real Real and they go with everything.
The other day I was struck with the idea of pairing this cantaloupe collar I had
