Hello from the third trimester! Below is a postcard of how I’ve been dressing as the baby (and my belly) continue to grow + one of my favourite films to watch for pregnancy style.
Pairing the baby bump with a balloon hem, a sailor knit and navy pumps. Earlier this year, when I thought I might be pregnant, my friend Lee very generously visited the Cristaseya sample sale in Paris for me. I had hoped they would have one of these sailor knits available and they DID! At the time I thought it would be perfect to wear open over the baby bump and now here we are :)
A couple of weeks ago I was going to the St. Lawrence Market to get concord grapes, wanting to make a grape/hazelnut version of Clare De Boer’s torn peach cake. It turned out I was too late for concords that trip BUT there is a small stall in the lower level (near the sweet shop where I like to get calissons) that sells Peruvian pima cotton clothing. These cream drawstring pants caught my eye and I left with those instead of the grapes. They have drawstrings at the bottom as well, which I wrapped around to create a gathered hem, a pant silhouette that I continue to be drawn too. I wore this outfit to visit one of my favourite stores in Toronto, Ewanika.
Red, black and silver comfy home look - where I spend most of my time these days. The silver slippers were a treat from Charvet to replace the cream suede pair I wore out (if you’re going to splurge on these I recommend going leather over suede!) and the red dress is from Shoppu (also worn here and here).
When I found out I was pregnant I quickly invested in this Comme Des Garcons muumuu to wear throughout the nine months. At the time my friend Lee advised that she liked to splurge on one maternity dress and I took her advice - it has served me well and I wear it at least once a week.
Growing up my mother always wore coats by iconic Canadian fashion designer Linda Lundström. She had a full purple LAPARKA complete with matching head muff. I found the above champagne coloured shell on Etsy - it folds up into a purse, a trademark feature of all the designer’s shells. Worn here over maternity leggings and a white cotton long sleeve and ASICS. I wore this to a pelvic floor therapy appointment (which I cannot recommend enough if pregnant).
Here, a similar look but less casual - a St. John Knits pleated skirt (St. John Knits bottoms make for great maternity wear!), white button up shirt and Mary Janes - I wore this to the video store.
The best thing I did for my maternity wardrobe was invest in four oversized mens’ shirts from O’Connells in Buffalo (previously mentioned here and here). I didn’t want to buy anything specifically for maternity (or that I wouldn’t want to wear after) and these are perfect. The above blue and white striped shirt is the fanciest one and it just feels so nice to wear, even with leggings and slippers. Note: I did end up getting maternity bike shorts and leggings which I do recommend.
Iconic striped bumps in Father of The Bride Part II which you better believe I watched again as soon as I found out I was pregnant. The above image was an inspiration for my shirt purchases.
When pregnant, jersey is your friend. Here is a layered look - a cream Lemaire jersey t-shirt dress over leggings, with a black cotton knit tank on top of that (which is actually part of another dress but I like to layer it over many outfits).
Here is what I wore to visit Acadia Books, on a day when it was cool enough for a cashmere layer but warm enough for the belly to be out (pregnancy equivalent of sweater and shorts weather). I love visiting Acadia - its where my beloved Tina Barney Theater of Manners book is from (I would die to see her exhibition at Jeu de Paume which is on now through January 19th). They also have a wonderful children’s books section - I was on the hunt for Madeline books (success!) and I loved the below book, illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans (story by Munro Leaf): Noodle.
Fortieth birthday outfit <3 This shirt is vintage Moschino Cheap & Chic and I have worn it on previous birthdays and to my bachelorette dinner - I love it for special occasions. I adapted it to wear this week along with this Mara Hoffman skirt from a couple of years ago that has turned out to be the ideal maternity skirt.
Fortieth birthday outfit part two: leather and pearls. My friend Joe called this my ‘goth mom’ look. I changed into this for dinner at Restaurant 20 Victoria. I needed to get back into jersey at this point in the day and my goal was chic comfort to enjoy the most beautiful meal. I can’t recommend 20 Victoria enough, especially for special occasions (we had our wedding dinner there!) - the service and food are sublime and you leave completely blissed out, like you’ve had the best massage of your life.
A navy, cream and brown look. I’m back in the pima cotton pants, this time with the bottoms let out. I wore this to procure a tray of figs for a cake I am baking to bring to a dinner on Monday.
Meryl’s Pregnancy Style in Heartburn + Gladys Goose
I’d been eager to revisit Heartburn since becoming pregnant as I remembered loving Meryl Streep’s character’s outfits (and their house!). Below, some favourites:
Perhaps you spotted a goose head in some of the above outfit photos. Inspired by the nursery decor in Heartburn I too wanted to have a Gladys Goose Lamp for the baby’s room (although for now it’s stationed in our living room). I settled for a replica from a small toy store in Ontario, although many originals can be found (for a price!) online.
I’ll share more films I’ve enjoyed watching while pregnant soon.
Thank you for reading <3
AGNÈS B. LAMB IN A CLASSIC CARDIGAN POSTSCRIPT
A company called Egmont sells lamps in the spirit of Gladys Goose! I feel compelled to mention it bc they have a Scottie Dog Lamp that is darling :^)
Is that a dark denim baby carrier?! Wow! I had a linen Ergobaby I loved (out of the like 8 carriers I ended up with) but denim is even better
