To celebrate the start of summer here is a little postcard of screenshots I’ve taken over the years that continue to inspire how I dress for warmer weather. It could also double as a short list of recommended summer viewing.
The Green Ray, 1986
My favourite outfits from Eric Rohmer’s summer vacation film The Green Ray all happen at the start, with shots of women lounging in the sun in a palette of white, pale pink and black. I love the pale pink Bermuda shorts especially (Lemaire made a similar pair last summer although not quite the length) and the red espadrilles.
Another early scene of note: sipping tea and eating berries in a perfect tomato red cotton poplin dress. I think about the rolled, puffed sleeves and silver bracelet often - as well as the black corset with the fallen strap.
Masquerade, 1988
I love Meg Tilly’s wardrobe in the romantic thriller Masquerade (which was written by Dick Wolf!). The sailor dress, the headbands, plenty of white cotton dresses, the perfect oversized t shirt, lots of pastel knitwear layered over golf shirts - all of which makes perfect sense for it’s Southampton setting. Honourable mention to Kim Cattrall’s belted t shirt dress.
Ice Cream is the best summer accessory
Like a basket of peaches or a tray of figs, an ice cream cone (or bar in the case of the example below) is the ideal summer accessory, and one I add often.
I love the above scene from Jazz on a Summer’s Day, a documentary about the Newport Jazz Festival filmed by Bert Stern in Rhode Island in 1958. Looking a little disgruntled while eating an ice cream bar, wearing a white dress and a thin black watch - 10/10. This is available to stream on Kanopy and makes for a very relaxing viewing.
The above is an iconic scene (to me) from The Lace Maker (1977), Isabelle Huppert’s first big role. She illustrates ice cream as an accessory best - running with multiple ice cream cones is the perfect summer sport.
Parenthood, 1989
A look from Ron Howard’s Parenthood that inspired an outfit last summer (slide three).
Aspirational Hats
A glorious hat scene from Francis Ford Coppola’s contribution to New York Stories -Life Without Zoe (co-written and with costumes by an 18 year old Sofia!).
More summer hat inspiration:
Liv and Bibi’s hats from Ingmar Bergman’s Persona, 1966.
Hats on the French Riviera, from Along The Coast, 1958 by Agnès Varda.
A fringed straw hat and red bateau stripes on Mariel Hemingway in Personal Best.
Oversized black bucket hat and hoops from Last Summer in the Hamptons, 1995.
