Early Valentine’s Lunch
Menu:
Pink Salad
Spaghetti Bolognese
Ice Cream Sundae
I love to have spaghetti bolognese on Valentine’s Day - a romantic meal (Lady and the Tramp!) that takes time to prepare and is such a treat to eat. Joel and I will be away for Valentine’s Day (more on that to come) so we had our tradition of bolognese a little early.
We ate it as Sunday lunch before a late afternoon screening of Frederick Wiseman’s Menus-Plaisirs - Les Troisgros. As a quick side, this film was pure bliss to me (I cried from happiness twice while watching) and it flew by, even at a running time of 4 hours. Menus-Plaisirs translates to ‘small pleasures’ which makes me think of micro-utopias and certainly a plate of pasta for lunch is a micro-utopia. We made the bolognese the day before (using Canal House’s recipe, which calls for a cup of hot milk - an essential ingredient - Nigel Slater calls for cream in his!) and ate it with fresh bucatini (we call this adult Kraft Dinner) and parmesan, followed by a pink radicchio salad.
For dessert I made a sundae for two with classic vanilla ice cream, hot fudge sauce, leftover hazelnut praline from the soufflé, whipped cream and a cherry on top. Served in the Alessi Big Love Ice Cream Bowl, a past Valentine’s gift I bought ‘for the house’ (this makes a great gift by the way - make sure you add an extra heart-shaped spoon for sharing!).
