March Diet
Martha's Gardening Outfits, Granola as Grainy Toast, Rose Skirt, Carnation Napkin etc.
Last year I had a running post on instagram, a monthly “diet” of things that had either occupied my thoughts, moved me in some way or just felt special enough to share; what I was reading, watching, eating, wearing and, sometimes, visual research that fit with the mood of the month. I am revisiting this series and expanding upon it here as a new monthly letter for paying subscribers (thank you!).
From last year’s March Diet: Clarice Lispector / parsley cake / gingham kitchen / Canal House pea soup / Joel and the water lilies / baguette research / shell-topped lipstick perfume / spring bloomers / garden-ready / Jean Darlene and green
And here, this month’s:
Martha’s Gardening Outfits
My mother must have all of Martha Stewart’s books - they were staples in our family library growing up, although unimportant to me at the time. However, as I’ve gotten older (and slowly turning into my mother?!) I have also began looking to Martha for inspiration and wanted to add a few of her books to my own library. Most recently (which fittingly arrived on the first day of Spring) I ordered a copy of Martha Stewart’s Gardening, which grew from the journal she kept for 20 years about her Westport, Connecticut garden. Organized by month, it’s full of anecdotes, tips (which tree gives the tastiest apple for pie) and of course inspiration (like drying full blown peonies!) But one of my favourite parts is seeing what she wore while doing it all (and her fab haircut!).
