High Summer Blues
Blueberry Ice Cream, Pierre Deux, Blueberry Muffin KitKat, A Summer Drink with Notes of Cotton Candy
I love to measure summer by the waves of berries - first the strawberries and now here come the blueberries, both wild and farmed. Also blackberries, raspberries, black currants, etc. Below are some high summer delights in shades of blue.
Blueberry Ice Cream
I had been wanting to make blueberry ice cream ever since the colour (and taste!) of a perfectly round purple scoop - like a fortune teller’s ball - I had in the summer of 2020 left a lasting impression on me. Since getting my own ice cream maker earlier this year blueberry ice cream has been high on my list of summer flavours to make.

I bought a pint of blueberries from the farmer’s market and used the recipe from Chez Panisse Desserts by Lindsay Remolif Shere (which is proving to be one of my favourite sources for ice cream recipes). I added lemon zest and a bit of vanilla bean paste and then a crucial element, a sprinkle of crunchy salt on the finished scoops. I get my ice cream cups at a kitchen supply store in Toronto called Nikalou and the heart-shaped spoons are Alessi’s Big Love spoons, which are my favourite to eat ice cream with.
