To celebrate the start of fall, here is a postcard of screenshots I’ve taken (similar to my letter on summer wardrobes) that serve as my blueprints for fall dressing. It can also double as a list of recommended autumn viewing. (You may have to open this letter in your browser to view it fully).

Felicity, 1998-2002

First and foremost, I must start with Felicity, which originally aired when I was in high school. I watched it obsessively. Shortly after it ended I visited NYC with my mom and sister and insisted we start each day at Dean & Deluca (RIP) solely because of the show. I bought souvenir mugs on that trip and I am forever looking for the hat! Here is a copy of their cookbook. Beyond Felicity’s D&D uniform, it’s obviously a great reference for fall dressing. Below are some favourite looks from the first and final season that stood out on a recent rewatch.

9 1/2 Weeks, 1986

A bit of a tone shift from Felicity, 9 1/2 Weeks is an all-timer for transitional dressing with stunning styling and costume design by Bobbie Read. My parents had a copy of this on VHS that I watched at probably too young of an age, but Kim Basinger’s wardrobe (and her iconic haircut) left a lasting impression on me. Like Felicity, there is no shortage of great sweaters here plus perfect slouch socks, expert layering, oversized coats, big brown leather bags, Spring Street art gallery outfits, silver cuffs (two types!). It all looks very effortless, comfortable and chic.

the asymmetrical collar!
dream office!
absolutely love this look which reminds me of THIS favourite look from The Row
the white t shirt…
