2023 Flower Review
Mimosa Cookies, Matisse Poppies, Pink Carnations, Spring Confetti, Almond Bouquets, Holy Night Roses
The year in flowers:
A pastel arrangement for January - pink carnations, yellow buttercups and tulips during golden hour. I also made Niloufer Ichaporia King’s Cardamom Cake, a recipe that I return to often. I had a big bag of dried rose petals so I used some for the cake’s crackly top. I originally learned about the cake through Fanny Singer and have since enjoyed having Niloufer’s book, My Bombay Kitchen so much, for the writing as well as the recipes.
In February I was finishing a roll of film when my friend Joe and I took a winter walk up to the flower shops at Avenue and Davenport - I couldn’t resist getting a picture of him amongst the tulips in the late afternoon winter sun. We bought two bouquets of mimosa that day.
March brought me back to a favourite place in Paris, Aurore Capucine. A pastry shop straight out of dreams - a case of beautiful candy coloured fondant cakes with meringue toppings and handwritten labels. These sables made with floral flavours of geranium, mimosa and violet were bought for a cookie taste test. Here is 2019’s selection.
